How has the digital age changed the way teams are formed and how they function?

What a great question. The digital age has created profound changes about teams. The underlying truths about what makes teams effective and how we deal with each other as humans remains the same. Every team needs effective leaders who can influence others without the need for authority. That means there needs to be leadership from many team members, not just the one appointed or anointed to be in charge. The teams needs high levels of psychological safety, excellent listening skills, be respectful of each other, and recognize that each individual may bring different strengths and weaknesses.

The digital age alters the way we communicate which affects our relationships and how well we listen. In the formation stage, it may take more effort to identify who needs to be on the team and connect with them. So the co-ordination necessary to form the team can require more effort and time. There are scheduling issues and such that can also be more difficult.

Once a team is formed, here are the main things I’ve observed when working with digital / virtual teams:
    1. Technology is not perfect so you have to expect regular issues with one or more team members computers or internet connections. Sometimes, the app that the team uses can have a bad hair day. Patience and understanding are critical for team members to work through the expected delays and disconnects caused by imperfect technology.
    2. Paying attention and keeping people’s attention can be more challenging. When people are on video calls especially from home they can be easily distracted. The energy is also different with a video meeting than in-person. There is some significant effort involved to make up for these differences.
    3. Sometimes, people don’t listen in the same way on a video call then they do in person. You have to look out for these and make sure everyone is confirming clarification about what’s being said and what’s being agreed upon.
    4. The overall bond of team members is harder to establish and maintain. You can create that bond but you need to be aware that you have to work at it and influence your team members to work on it. Sometimes you have to create activities and interactions that might not be necessary in-person to foster bonding.
    5. All of this requires the team to establish some rules of engagement about how they work and communicate as a team. When everyone on the team understands how they have to show up digitally so the team can deliver great results, then you are on the right track.

Of course, there is a lot more to this. These are the big things I’ve noticed.
